Fairfax Peak: The DMV’s To-Be-Built Indoor Ski Slope

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has approved the Fairfax Peak project, an indoor snow sports facility set to be built in Lorton, Virginia, promising to bring 1,300 new jobs to the region. The measure was passed Tuesday night and solidifies an agreement with Alpine X, the company to be responsible for the construction and maintenance of the project.

The facility is planned to be built on top of the existing Fairfax County Landfill in Lorton (permanently covered in 1996), just off I-95 between exits 160 and 163. When completed, the project will be one of the largest indoor ski facilities in the world, offering 450,000 sf of snow sport fun, with a 1,700-foot long ski slope, rising up 280 feet at its highest peak.

Other planned features at the facility include:

-Multiple ski slopes (including one that meets Fédération Internationale de Ski standards, thus eligible to host competitions)

-”Ski park" with jumps, ramps etc for Winter X-type fun

-Bunny slope for new skiers

-Restaurant, bar, and ski shop (Après Ski, anyone?)

-Luxury hotel

-Gravity-powered Alpine-stye mountain coaster

-Water Park (outdoors)

-And possibly a Gondola to the facility from Occoquan Regional Park

The project is intended to expand the regional appeal of the Laurel Hills Recreation area and is anticipated to draw 400,000 visitors yearly, and contribute an additional annual tax revenue of $1,000,000 to the county.

Given the ambitious future of Lorton, now may be a great time to consider a move to an area that’s relatively affordable in comparison to much of Northern Virginia, but appears to be on the brink of even more robust development. Let’s discuss.
