CONTEMPORARY HOMES

Contemporary architecture (sometimes referred to as “modern architecture”) are the designs of today, and borrow aspects of minimalism, modernism, and other global design styles. It incorporates more curves and interesting shapes. Since contemporary isn’t from a specific period of time, what’s contemporary today may be different in five years.

In some homes you may find white walls and monochromatic furniture and accents, while others may boast textured or patterned walls with custom artwork tied into the home’s design. Whatever the finishes may be, contemporary homes typically offer an open, airy feel within, often tied into the surroundings through the implementation of large windows and sliding walls/doors to bring the outside in.

Some of the famous contemporary architects of our time include Peter Pennoyer and Rick Joy. Local favorites include husband and wife team Alonso and Francisca Alonso, and Robert Gurney.

Key Elements

  • Freedom of Thought. Architects and designers aren’t constrained by expectation, but are free to express their own ideas of space, lines, and materials.

  • Large windows. Sliding-glass doors and other expansive panes of glass allow light to enter rooms from multiple angles.

  • Asymmetry. Designs often incorporate the juxtaposition of size and scale, and utilize a myriad of building materials and textures.

  • Openness. Rooms often flow freely from one to another, with an abundance of windows opening sight lines even further.
